Toniebox 2 starter set
A soft, chunky speaker that plays a story when a child puts a figure on top. Screen-free, and simple enough for a one-year-old.

John Lewis lists the Toniebox 2 as suitable from 12 months. Its 28 reviews average 4.6, and MadeForMums scored it 4.8. The original Toniebox has many more reviews, but this is the version in the shops now, so it’s the one we’ve scored.
The complaints are practical ones. MadeForMums found the charging cable too short to be much use, and the tap and tilt controls take some getting used to. Then there’s the cost of figures. Once a child is into it you’ll probably want more, so budget for one or two extra.
It’s a good main present for a toddler, especially from grandparents. If they already have a Yoto, don’t buy this too. The two systems don’t share content.
What reviewers praise
- Easy for very young children to use on their own
- No screen
- Works with figures from the first Toniebox
What they complain about
- The charging cable is too short to reach most sockets
- Extra figures add up quickly
- Tapping and tilting to skip tracks can be fiddly for small hands
- Not for
- Parents who don't want to keep buying figures. The box is only as good as the stories you put on it.
