The second-generation AirTag is new, so there aren’t many retail reviews yet. John Lewis has eight, averaging 4.6. Treat the score as provisional and expect it to change as more come in.

Macworld’s review makes the case for it. The speaker is louder and Precision Finding works from further away, which is what matters when your keys are down the back of the sofa. The complaints carry over from the first version. It’s still chunky, there’s still no hole for a keyring, and the battery is a coin cell you replace rather than recharge.

Check two things before buying. First, make sure the person has an iPhone, because it won’t work with anything else. Second, budget for holders: a four-pack with nothing to attach the tags to just sits in a drawer. It suits someone who loses things, or a parent who travels and worries about their luggage.

What reviewers praise

  • Much louder than the first AirTag
  • Can be found from further away
  • Sets up in seconds on an iPhone

What they complain about

  • Only works with an iPhone or iPad
  • No keyring hole, so each one needs a holder bought separately
  • Too thick for a slim wallet
  • Runs on a coin cell battery, not a rechargeable one
Not for
Anyone with an Android phone. It won't work for them at all.
